Orasje + Faletici - Bosnia
The SDB supports two shelters in Bosnia. The first is Orasje, this is the home base of the SDB. If dogs are being re-homed they will always come from this shelter. This is because of the excellent care and devotion from the manager Svjetlana Haracic. The second shelter is Faletici, Sarajevo. But we only pay for the night guard to prevent unauthorized entries. We do not support more due to the horrible circumstances the dogs live under. We had many discussions about this, but there is not enough personnel and knowledge to improve the lives of the animals. We are still negotiating. Orasje has started in the beginning of this century. Svjetlana was given a piece of land by the mayor and got support to build the fencing around it. Also some kennels were build. When SDB started working with this shelter in 2007, there were only 65 dogs. Now there are around 160 and it is increasing. The SDB pays personnel, food, care and medical care. The situation in Bosnia is horrible. Although we had a new law implemented there is still a lot of animal cruelty. After the war many animals became homeless because of their owners left, were unable to care or died. There was an explosion of births, and this is why there is an enormous amount of dogs and cats living on the streets. There are severe atrocities towards animals, putting them on fire, tie them in trees to choke, starve them to death, shooting at them, cutting tails to bleed them to death etc etc. With the new law municipalities are obliged to fix the problem with strays the humane way, there is an official no-kill policy. We have been organizing sterilizations in the shelters for many years, but last year we decided to grow. We are cooperating with local volunteers and willing mayors to organize CNR campaigns and educational projects. This leads to excellent results, but we have just started, so there is a lot of work ahead of us. We do CNR campaigns at least twice a year with Dutch vets, and in between we ask one Bosnian vet to go to locations for the weekend to do sterilizations. This is the one of the two Bosnian vets who know how to perform these operations. That is why we also invite many vets and students to join us at the clinic. Through this we can show them how it should be done! WEBSITE ** Note AMCF because we can not send parcels directly to Bosnia we work together with SDB Dierenopvang Bosnie. ** De AMCF ontvangt regelmatig medicijnen van Hondenopvang Bosnie en probeert hen ook te steunen wanneer ze specifieke wensen hebben.
