Spay Panama Dai Lapa
The minimum wage in Panama is $300/US dollars, therefor spay/neuter services were beyond the reach of many regular Panamanians. Also, Panamanians lack the understanding of the importance of sterilizing their pets. And most Panamanians are tolerant of strays and their presence/misery has become acceptable in Panamanian society. Panama does not have the funds to capture, impound and maintain a no-kill shelter, thus the animals roam the streets looking for food and shelter. Many die on the streets due to starvation, disease, exposure, car accidents, and lack of basic companion animal care.
Spay/Panama brings affordable neutering to low income families, and also Traps/Neuters/Releases stray dogs and cats with the help of other animal welfare groups. The clinic is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and we ask $25 for a dog and $12 for a cat to be neutered, which only covers the costs of medications etc. (local veteranarians ask between $60 and $300). Our volunteers work for free to keep the service affordable. Spay Panama also operates on location in remote area’s known for poverty. Here we get average donations between $.5 and $5 per animal which causes our organization to end up in red. We never turn an animal away. Spay/Panama is focused on spaying and neutering dogs and cats to stop the overpopulation which causes many animals to live miserable lives on the streets. Although we do not aim to be a shelter, we typically have about 15 to 20 kittens up for adoption. www.spaypanama.org |
