Peru - Amazon Cares
Since April 2006, the NGO Amazon C.A.R.E.S. has got an area of 8000 m² in the Amazon Jungle, almost 10 km away from the city of Iquitos (Loreto-Peru), reachable by the river or by road. We have build a shelter with rustic material, respecting the environment but also going by our means. The shelter contains 2 separated places for dogs and another place for puppies (which is not suitable to use right now), a "Maloca" (a traditional community house that serves as an attention zone), a house for volunteers and another one for the security guard. We have a plant of water treatment and a generator set that offers electricity a few hours a day.We can accommodate about 30 to 40 dogs if we organize the space, which is in bad condition due to the tropical rains. The place is beautiful as you could see in the PowerPoint, and the animals are happy here, some of them stay outside and can run freely. But now, with the time being, the shelter doesn’t seem suitable for our little animals: the floor is pure mud, the leaves let the rain pass through, and the wood is getting rotted. This is the reason why we are now asking for some support, from the local authorities and outsiders as well; so with the support we might receive, we would fix the site and maybe extend the place, we could also build a new shelter with stronger material (we already have the design and the approximate budget). We have got a veterinary clinic too in the city of Iquitos, and we also provide the districts with limited resources with some medical by means of movable campaigns. OUR MISSION Amazon c.a.r.e.s. seeks better and living conditions for ALL living beings of the Peruvian Amazon region. This includes appropriate care, respect, and protection from cruelty and neglect. www.amazoncares.org | Click on the photos to go to the photo album of the shelter.
