Update 28/4/2010

As you know the AMCF started a project last year to help the burned down shelter QAWS in Qatar. This has resulted in more than 1600 euro. They are working hard to rebuild the shelters and as agreed with them many materials have been bought. Herewith a few photo’s of the already bought items. Till now the people from QAWS have bought of the sponsor money:

100 flea / tick collars
Cleaning materials
Brushes
Dog beds
Cat beds
Blankets
Shampoo
Feeding trays
Toys
Collars
Pup and kitten feeding bottles
Rabbit water bottles
Cat furniture

We will receive invoices when all is bought so we can show that your money has been well spent.

Thanks again to every one who helped QAWS.

Update 26/01/2010

Finally we have news on the temporary dog shelter! It's a far cry from what we used to have but we know we are still a lot luckier then others. We currently have 30 very basic outdoor runs and now we have somewhere for them to be safe and looked after we can start to tackle the next problem - the summer. With temperatures of 50 degrees celcius and higher the dogs have to be in air conditioning so the race is on to come up with a solution as to how to keep them cool. Although we only have 30 runs and some of those are still not completely finished we are bursting to the seams with animals once again. We currently have over 35 puppies and 30 adults at the shelter and another 20 still in foster care. We don't have a cat facility just yet but a local boarding kennel has generously lent us their facilities for our cats and kittens until we can come up with a building of some sorts for the cats. We have had the architectural plans drawn up for a new, state of the art facility and we hope that sometime in the not so distant future we'll be sending you photos of our new home. Again, thank you to everyone who has supported us - it's fantastic to see such great support from all over the world.

Update 25/10/09

The clearance has begun and it's almost like there was nothing on that site. We're in the process of meeting with a team of architects that have offered to design the new shelter for us for free and we're all very excited at the new plans that are being drawn up. The support from everyone has been fantastic and hopefully we'll be up and running very soon. We're aiming to have a temporary shelter up before Christmas as it's one of our busiest times of the year for animals being abandoned but we're hoping the new shelter will be ready shortly after. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us.

Update 17/9 email QAWS

All of us at QAWS offer our heartfelt thanks to you and your group, emails such as these help us to keep moving forward in our aim to provide a bigger and better shelter for those in need in Qatar.

We have now received the all clear from the authorities following their fire investigation. The huge clean up task will soon be underway. It is our intention to keep you all informed by way of a photgraph story, a picture shows far better what is happening than our words.

At this time we have a company of architects offering their support by way of plans, drawings, blue-prints and so on. A meeting is due to be held with the landowners to discuss building a larger shelter to offer more places for the animals in need. Once we have agreed on the number of kennels and cat condo's we will come back to you with the quantities of equipment.

Storage is an issue right now and we would respectfully request that you bear with us until things are a little clearer.

We will keep in touch.

Kind Regards

Janet.

Fire destroys shelter QAWS Qatar

Picture
Yesterday we received this email from Kelly, our contact at QAWS Qatar.

"It's with great sadness that I have to send this email to you.

QAWS suffered a devastating fire on Thursday 3rd September and our shelter was completely burnt to the ground. Although we managed to evacuate over 100 animals, we unfortunately lost around 35 dogs, cats and rabbits as well as our resident possum. We have lost absolutely everything in the fire and are now waiting for the fire investigation to finish so we are allowed to move back in to lay to rest those animals that were unable to escape. All QAWS now has is the surviving animals and the collars they were wearing.

The surviving animals were all moved into temporary accomodation at veterinary clinics and boarding kennels and all but 10 are now in foster homes. We are hoping to have the final 10 fostered by tomorrow evening and then we can begin to concentrate on rebuilding the shelter.

Please be assured that this will not stop us and we are determined to continue and plan to build a bigger, better and stronger shelter as soon as is physically possible. We have been overwhelmed with the support from the public and have been inundated with donations of food and bedding for the animals. We now have enough food to feed all the fostered animals for the next month or so. As soon as we have arranged temporary storage facilities we will start to collect items to equip the new shelter but we estimate 8 -12 weeks before we have any kind of operational shelter open.

Please could you post some kind of update on your site under the QAWS details just to let people know that we are still here and we will be back stronger then ever!

If you would like to see some of the photos of the fire please go to our Facebook
Our website www.qaws.org has been turned into a crisis webpage and we will be updating it regularly with our progress and how people can help."
