Marian is a friend of mine, a kind, humble and simple man. Two years ago he was working for a transportation company in Bucharest, near an old, deserted, animal farm. There were already some dogs there that he was feeding but in time, more dogs found themselves a shelter in the same yard so now, we have almost 50 dogs, divided in «gangs», some of them in big closed stables, some of them free. We go to check on them almost every day, we started to sterilize some of them as well.

The shelter is improvised, far from being a luxury but animals are happy here, loved, cared and fed with our humble possibilities.

Dogs eat bones, bread and sometimes dog food that we get from volunteers.

Our team is formed by Marian, Avedis, myself and Alexandra.
Marian owns a car and feeds the dogs during the week. Avedis is a foster family for the dogs who need help, Alexandra helps us with sterilizations and I also try to help as much as I can with food, the site, sterilizing, adoptions abroad etc.

In 1995, in order to be able to take over and offer shelter for a higher number of animals from the streets, we moved from Arad to Minis village. In 2007, after 12 years in which we took over/treated/offered shelter/given for adoption over 300 stray animals, we founded APAM, with the purpose to legalize and extend our activity.
Within 2007-2009 we’ve saved/treated/offered shelter for over 500 animals out of which for a significant percent we’ve found adoptive homes.
Currently we run the shelter for 100 dogs and 20 cats in Minis. We have 30 folds for dogs and one cat’s house currently with 20 cats. The number of animals in our care varies from month to month depending on the adoptions and on the emergencies from the street we are facing every day.
Our current activity, besides managing the dogs and cats shelter, involves adoption campaigns (which give us the possibility to keep saving from the streets) and neutering campaigns.
We’ve extended our rescue activity from Arad district (where the shelter is located) to Romania’s capital – Bucharest and any other Romania city where an animal in distress needs our help. We have now near Bucharest a small stationary with a capacity of 25 dogs and 10 cats for urgent cases from the area. We took over along the time animals in distress from all the corners of the country.
We plan in the future to extend our activity in order to save and give for adoption more animals and to build a small veterinary clinic within the shelter since at this moment we are traveling for miles to Arad city for veterinary care.

Animals are always abused in Romania. Many people hunt and torture them, they poision and shoot them to eliminate the overpopulation. There are homeless everywhere, at every block, at every street, at every place.

Slatina, a city from Romania with 80.000 rezidents and more than 4 000 stray dogs. Is estimated that between 8 000-10 000 dogs have been killed in 7 years, only in this city. There is currently two shelters in Slatina to tackel this problem: "Our Friends" a now-kill shelter and the local killing pound who belongs to the City Hall. "Our Friends" - "Prietenii Nostri"in our language is a charity officially founded in 2005, to give an answer to the tragic situation of dogs in Slatina. Our organization currently houses 500 dogs and strives to promote their well being. All of the dogs there have been rescued from certain death, either from the local killing pound or from the streets. The dogs are all sterilized (350 of them thanks to Vier-Pfoten Foundation) and vaccineted against rabies, furthey more they are regulary treated against fleas, ticks and worms and they are cared for. Thanks to our sponsors in Holland, they are well fed. An international adoption program is also in place, offering them the chance of a better life and having a home. This coincides with a local sterilization program, which aims from institution around the city and from local owners to sterilize dogs, who can not afford the sterilization fee.

The program also encourages those in the local community to get their own pets neutered and runs educational projects in schools to promote animals rights, having formed a collaboration intending to improve the realation ship between children and animals.

The organization has always been present at manifestations, fighting for a better legislation for animals in Romania.

Romania - the Nature

The shelter accommodates 200 dogs and the cattery 70 cats. We have 4 workers, employed with labour licence. We have 4 serious volunteers at this moment. There are also other volunteers, about 12, helping once or twice/week.The shelter is located in a suburb, of Bucharest, next to the ring, named popesti-Leordeni. The land is 3 000 sqm. There is built one storage, a well, a cesspit, route-disinfector, one big enclosure, with 9 pens, three small enclosures, each with 8 pens, individual pens, quarantine and isolating pens, play-area. Under construction is the main building: vet clinic, grooming-room, educational center, reception-lobby, office, kitchen, maintenance facilities, and cattery. Also under construction is cats play-area, water-house, laundry and pumping water installation, the boarding-kennels and electric installation.

We(me and Roxi) do a lot of things,  as running a TNR program for dogs and cats in the suburb where the shelter is located(catch, sterilize, deworm, deparasitate and vaccinate, return 500 animals/year for the community; we have an agreement with the townhall), we rescue dogs and cats, treat them and then give them back or rehome them, about 300/year(I mention that rehoming procent is very low in our country)we have an educational program for children in this suburb, Popesti-Leordeni, about how to take care about dogs, organizes events and set up an animal lovers club.

Romenia - Orfa

The stray dogs shelter Glina was founded by 5 volunteers. Five women with full-time jobs and family who could no longer watch the suffering of the stray animals are taking care of this shelter. Meanwhile the volunteers are running a shelter of about 200 dogs, received from the killing pounds and rescued from the street. Most of the dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and chipped on the cost of the volunteers. In the area of the shelter, there is no water supply and water for the 250 dogs, to get this they have to get it almost 1 km away. The dog cages are made of pallets, which should be regularly re-covered with pieces of vinyl so that the dogs remain dry in their cages. There is also no electricity present in the shelter.

Laila is another shelter in the area of
Bucharest
, which is considered as one of the poorest dog shelters. This shelter has currently about 500 dogs. The circumstances are very primitive.
In addition, the foundation supports also the shelter in Pascani (about 50 dogs) where the circumstances are even worse due to lack of care and food.
Supporting sterilization programs is among one of the tasks of the foundation. The chairman of the foundation is in direct contact with the volunteers of the shelters which insures that direct assistance is offered and donations arrive a the right place. www.dierenhulporfa.nl
