Horjul
Horjul animal shelter is a small animal shelter in which there are currently 38 dogs and 85 cats. Two full time employees and 10 volunteers take care of their well being. Dogs are staying in internal and external kennels and they are daily released in a fenced yard. Volunteers are in charge of regular walks. Cats are settled in internal and external catteries. By Slovenian law local communities are obliged to pay for 30 days of basic care expenses for abandoned animals. After 30 day term the shelter covers the expenses of medical treatment and eventual difficult veterinary procedures with donations. Even though there is never enough money and there are always too many abandoned animals, we try to provide them with the best we can- quality food, veterinary care and socialization and well being in the time of their stay at the animal shelter. Last year we took care of 200 dogs, 139 cats were rehomed and 489 stray cats were neutered and returned to the environment. In search of new homes for them we try to find the right owner for the right animal, because only then living together can be enjoyable for both for the next 10-15 years. Before sending animals to new homes they are treated for parasites, checked by a veterinarian, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. We are always willing to help new owners with answers to their questions and advice. Beside taking care of animals in the shelter we are also active in limiting stray cats population. We practice TNR method on the field, where we neuter stray cats and then return them back to the environment. We try to find good homes for all our animals and herewith do not put animals to sleep, unless they are severly ill or aggressive.
Horjul animal shelter is not an ordinary animal shelter but a shelter where animals get a second chance. Our guideline is that we rehome animals only to equally good or even better places than ours. www.zavetisce-horjul.net |
