The Volyn Society for the Protection of Animals is a group of dedicated volunteers who house, feed, and find homes for the homeless dogs and cats of Lutsk, Ukraine. The local situation of homeless dogs and cats is serious. The general population thinks spaying/neutering of animals is “immoral” and they often let their pets out to roam, which makes the situation worse. The volunteers of the VSPA work tirelessly to care for these stranded animals, and spend their own money to get these animals sterilized and give them medical treatment. There are four different “mini” shelters located throughout the city, where dogs are kept outdoors near someone’s home. Recently there were as many as 60+ dogs kept at one shelter. One shelter is outside the city in the village of Promyn, which houses about 20 dogs. Cats are kept mainly in volunteers’ apartments until a home is found.

They have a place at a local market where they bring some of the smaller dogs and cats in order to find homes for them. They also have had some success in putting advertisements in the paper as well.

One of the main things they are working on is getting a building for a shelter so they can care for the animals medical needs and have a central holding place for them. It is very difficult for the volunteers to keep track of all of the dogs and cats they have, and to make sure all their needs are met, but they do what they can with what they have.

I truly admire the work the volunteers are doing to improve the lives of so many helpless and hopeless dogs and cats here in Lutsk. The task is daunting, but they work hard to make a difference in these animals’ lives. www.zahysttvaryn.lutsk.ua
