Dear Friends of S.P.A.R.E.

It is with great sadness, yet optimism for the future of animals in =
Egypt, that we announce this piece of news.

By the end of July, we will close down the S.P.A.R.E. Shelter, after ten =
years of working in Cairo. We are still working on getting all of our =
dogs adopted, and are still looking for adopters and/or foster homes. If =
you, or anyone you know, would like to adopt one of our dogs, please =
contact us. We greatly appreciate your support on this front.

S.P.A.R.E. will continue, however, as an animal welfare society that =
still fights for, and protects, the rights of animals in Egypt. We will =
never stop fighting this very harsh battle for those who are voiceless. =
Our activities will center around changing the core of animal welfare in =
Egypt, in order to guarantee that animals have laws that protect them; =
that they live, and work in proper conditions; that they are not abused =
in the streets or anywhere else.

It was a very, very hard decision for us to make, but without enough =
funds, maintaining a Shelter is an impossible endeavor. Though we have =
saved thousands of animals throughout the past ten years, we believe =
that we will be able to save millions of animals in the future if we =
concentrate on changing the heart of the problem. We feel that it is =
more effective to solve the problem of cruelty to animals and animal =
abuse on the long term, by channeling our energies and finances towards =
creating and maintaining strong, stable awareness campaigns that will =
change the fate of animals.

And we sincerely believe that we can, and will, change the fate of these =
animals.

One of the milestones we have reached, after ten years of work, is =
participating in a pilot TNR project that we strongly believe will be =
the first stepping stone in effectively changing the fate of stray =
animals in Egypt. In co-operation with WSPA (and/or other international =
organizations) the GOVS (who are joining us for the first time in =
Egypt), Brooke Hospital and the Egyptian Federation for Animal Welfare =
, S.P.A.R.E will pave the way for humane stray animal control methods =
in Egypt. Simply put, stray cats and dogs will no longer be shot by the =
GOVs, but will be trapped, neutered and released (TNR) back into their =
environment, and will no longer have to suffer at the mercy of poisoning =
and shooting sprees. For the rest of 2010, we will be concentrating all =
of our efforts on getting this program on the go (ready for 2011) and =
supporting the campaign with extensive awareness programs to educate =
people about the benefits of TNR.

Amongst other project, we will work towards implementing and carrying =
forth the following programs:

1. Changing the animal rights laws in Egypt to protect animals, and =
thus make sure that those who hurt animals are punished for it. We will =
work closely with lawyers to create a constitution that protects working =
and domestic animals alike. This program will go hand in hand with our =
conferences with Al Azhar that took place over the past few years.

2. Operate our Mobile Clinic as part of our community outreach =
program to benefit both poor farming communities and their animals.=20

3. Campaign against cruel and dire working situations for all =
animals in pet shops, the circus, the camel market, Friday market, Abu =
Rawash, private zoos and anywhere else where animals are treated with =
disrespect and abused.

4. Implement the pilot TNR program for strays in Hadayek El Ahram. =
This program is the first of its kind in Egypt, and will truly change =
the fate of stray animals, and will hopefully change the way people =
perceive stray animals.

5. Hold awareness events in public venues to educate the general =
public

6. Educational events at schools to teach the generations to come =
about mercy to animals

7. Help other animal Shelters with our knowledge, and expertise in =
maintaining a Shelter and proper conditions for animals.

S.P.A.R.E. will become an animal welfare society proper, much like WSPA =
(with which we are affiliated) and other organizations that do not have =
animal shelters, but rather put their efforts, funds and donations =
towards campaigning for animal rights, creating public awareness and =
changing legislations that affect the animal welfare cause on the long =
term.

We still need volunteers; we still need your time; we still need your =
energy; we still need your support, your thoughts and above all your =
love for animals, so that we can make a true difference for these poor, =
beautiful sentient beings in our country.=20

Our tentative plan is to have headquarters by late September to mid =
October 2010, where all animal lovers who wish to fight for the cause =
can truly make a difference by joining forces to create a platform =
through which animals can have the rights they deserve.

There will be more updates on this plan very soon.

Sincerely,
S.P.A.R.E. Board
