   I love    BSAPP!

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Valentines dog Dear BSAPP friends:

2008 was our best year yet, we look forward to making 2009 even better! Thank you to all of our volunteers and supporters both inside and outside of Bulgaria for helping BSAPP raise 15,000 BGN which resulted in the ability to care for injured and sick animals, carry out sterilizations and find new homes for more than 40 dogs and cats! We have big plans for 2009 so show your LOVE to a homeless dog or cat this Valentine's Day by becoming a volunteer, a foster parent or a BSAPP sponsor. Learn more!

               Say what?

BSAPP proudly announces the establishement of the BSAPP Varna branch, BSAPP's first partnership serving the Black Sea coast. UK native Jacquie New will head up the operation, helping spread the mission of BSAPP in a community in great need of assistance. Jacquie has spent the past year in Varna capturing stray animals and taking them in for sterilization. She has also successfully found loving homes for many of them. She cites the need to do more as her reason for partnering with BSAPP. The Varna branch will not have shelter facilities, but will be a much needed helping hand for animals in crisis. BSAPP looks forward to bringing this much needed relief to Varna.
Hope Floats: Making a Difference One Community at a Time

hope floats

Students at the American College of Sofia's Animal Protection Club are giving a new meaning to the words "Community Action." They have decided to implement a zero tolerance policy for unwanted animals being born on the ACS campus. Each spring and summer the campus is plagued with starving, sick and injured puppies, which have gone largely ignored until now. Students plan to hold a raffle at the school to raise money to sterilize, vaccinate and provide veterinary services to all of the animals currently living on campus. Once the project is complete, all of the animals will be properly documented according to EU standards. The Animal Protection Club members hope to make ACS a model of community action for other individuals seeking to improve the lives of homeless dogs and cats.

First step toward trap-sterilize-return

Thanks to the results of successful fundraising efforts in 2008, a trend that we hope will continue in 2009 and beyond, BSAPP intends to purchase a used utility vehicle that will serve as a mini-sized mobile clinic. Although the vehicle will not be large enough or sufficiently equipped to carry out on-the-spot sterilizaitons, it will allow Dr. Stoyanov and volunteers to bring along vaccinations and other equipment to provide medical services to needy dogs and cats. With room enough for at least 2-3 cages, the vehicle will also transport animals to the shelter for sterilization surgery. After a few days of recovery at the shelter, the animals will be returned to their original habitat.

Saying "no" to animal cruelty: not so easy

It seems that the Animal Protection Act passed in late January of 2008 has not been enough to deter the occurrence of violence against animals in Bulgaria. A new collaborative campaign between several animal welfare NGOs including the 4 Paws organization, aims to make sure people understand that crimes against animals will not be tolerated. Check out the simple yet effective advertizing campaign the has been launched to educate the public about animal cruelty.

We value your support and thank you for your kindness!

Sincerely,

Dr. Stoyan Stoyanov, DVM and Jennifer Kudashov
