Each year Australia exports around 4 million sheep to the Middle East on a deadly journey that takes up to 32 days. Animals have to endure terrible travelling conditions where hundreds die each year on sea voyages and more succumb to illness and disease after arrival.=20 =20 The action taken last year created more visibility for the Handle with Care coalition and showed international condemnation to the Australian live exports, where a total of 30 animal welfare groups participated on this action and wrote letters to the embassies in countries such as Hungary, Ireland, Kenya and Nepal to name a few. We also informed the Australian government that over 29,000 people had signed to our petition (up to 29/07/08). The Governments reply stated their intentions to improve animal welfare practices in the importing countries and investing $7.6 million over the next four years to upgrade livestock facilities in the Middle East. In the past few weeks we have heard that due to the lack of shade and bad conditions in the feedlot is causing high mortality among sheep and cattle in Bahrain.
